Eric is the first person in Forks to speak to Bella, and he instantly develops a crush on her. When Mike Newton also falls for Bella, a rivalry forms between the two (Twilight, pg. 55). He is one of the boys to ask her to the girl's choice Spring Dance, though Bella turns him down (Twilight, pg. 76). He ends up going to the dance with Angela Weber (Twilight, pg. 78).
